Referee Committee
The Referee Committee of the AFBN plays a central role in ensuring fair and safe games within the Dutch flag and tackle leagues. The committee supports, guides and develops the referees who are on the field week in and week out to apply the rules and keep the game on track.
Duties of the Referee Committee
The Referee Committee engages in:
-
the recruitment and training of new officials;
-
Scheduling and assigning referees for matches;
-
Supervising and evaluating (novice and experienced) referees;
-
Organizing in-service training, courses and clinics;
-
Maintaining the rules of the game and translating rule changes into practice;
-
encouraging sporting behavior on and around the field.
The committee works closely with the board, league management and the Disciplinary Committee.
Training and development
The AFBN is investing active in training new referees and further developing existing crews. Through courses, online modules and practice supervision, officials are given the tools and knowledge to be confident on the field. In addition, regular evaluations are held to ensure quality and uniformity in refereeing. There are also exchanges with other countries to learn as much as possible from all of them.
Collaboration with teams
Teams are required to provide and support referees. The Referee Committee provides guidance to clubs to train their members to become certified officials. Good cooperation between teams and referees is essential to the success of the sport.
Respect for the official
Referees make the game possible. The AFBN stands for a culture of respect, safety and fair play. The Referee Committee is committed to protecting officials from verbal and physical misconduct and works with the Disciplinary Committee and Confidential Liaison as needed.

The referee committee currently consists of 4 members.
- Stephan Tuinenburg (president)
