Become a Referee with the AFBN
No American football without referees. They ensure safety, sportsmanship and fair play - whether flag or tackle. Referees are essential to the game, forming a close and passionate community within our sport.
Indispensable and understaffed
Like many other sports, American football in the Netherlands struggles with a shortage of officials. Without enough referees, games cannot go on. That is why we are looking for new people - people like you. Whether you are a player, fan or newcomer: everyone can learn.
What makes it fun?
You are right in the middle of the game and get to know the sport through and through
You will be part of a collegial team of officials
You will develop skills such as communication, decision making and leadership
You will contribute to the growth and professionalization of the sport
You can advance to national finals and even international tournaments (e.g., IFAF matches)
There are opportunities in both flag football as tackle football. You do not need to have years of experience - we will train you.
Training & mentoring
The AFBN will soon offer an online basic module for new referees, including theory and some practical guidance. After that, you can progress to higher levels at your own pace. Experienced officials will also be supported with in-service training and evaluation moments.
